Nomination for Distinguished Alumni is Now Open

The Search Committee for the Distinguished Alumni Awards announced that it is now accepting nominations for the award that will be given out on its 96th founding anniversary on November 8, 2008. All alumni of PCS from grade school up to fourth year high school may be nominated.

The awards are intended to:

  1. Propagate the spirit of service in consonance with the PCS Motto “Noblesse Oblige”
  2. Acknowledge exemplary contributions of PCS alumni to national development
  3. Inspire other graduates to live out the PCS Vision and Mission

The awards will have three categories:

  • NOBLESSE OBLIGE SERVICE AWARD – given to an alumnus / alumna / class who has made an outstanding / exemplary contribution to the PACO CATHOLIC SCHOOL community.
  • FR. GODOFREDO ALDENJUISEN DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD – given to somebody who has achieved distinction / excellence in his / her chosen field of endeavor.
  • MSGR. DOMINGO A. CIRILOS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD – given to an alumnus / alumna who has displayed hard work, perseverance, a strong determination and a firm vision to succeed in life.

Criteria for Judging:

  1. The nominee must be a graduate of either the Grade School or High School of PCS (for all awards)
  2. The nominee must have manifested steadfast loyalty to the Catholic ideals and teachings of the school in his own community or parish. (for all awards)
  3. The nominee must have extended outstanding / exemplary contribution / service to the school and parish (for Award # 1)
  4. The nominee must have excelled in his chosen field of endeavor (for Award # 2)
  5. The nominee must have attained his goal through his strong determination, hard work, faith in himself and clear vision. (for Award # 3)

New PCB Officers Elected

Parents of high school students trooped to the school last Saturday, July 5, 2008 for the annual open house and election of officers to the Parents Coordinating Board. Officers were elected at the homeroom level and the year level. The officers of the year level elected from among themselves the officers of the PCB under the supervision of the high school principal, Mrs. Dina B. Aabriso.

Mrs. Rosillyn R. Tanyag was elected PCB chairman for the second time. Joining her are Dr. Joyce M. Rosalejos (vice-chairman internal), Ms. Juvel P. Katigbak (vice-chairman external), Ms. Rachel M. Navarro (secretary), Ms. Maria Fatima S. Castillo (assistant secretary), Mr. Raymundo T. Remollena Jr (treasurer), Ms. Mary Garce L. Manuel (assistant treasurer), Ms. Cristina R. Francisco (auditor), Ms. Nennette R. Baltazar (PRO) and Mr. Gaudencio S. Palomo III (business manager). The other board members are: Ms. Marites B. Corcuera, Ms. Leilani B. Domingo, Ms. Maria Elizabeth F. Jamias, Ms. Nicrose S. Flores, Dr. Emilia DC. Cancio, and Ms. Wilma E. Teaño.

They will be inducted into office in simple ceremonies on July 26, 2008.

Paconian Gets "Excellence in Patient Centered Care" Award

Another Paconian received an award of excellenc in the United States. Below are excerpts from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

Two staff nurses from the Kings Highway Division (KHD) —Faye Dunn, RN, and Melinda Mones-Vinco, RN – were honored at the Beatrice Renfield Circle of Excellence for “Excellence in Patient Centered Care,” along with Jane Ashe, RN, of The Robert Mapplethorpe Residential Treatment Facility; and Diane Carroll, RN, Phillips Ambulatory Care Center.

Ms. Vinco-Mones is a staff nurse in 3 North of the Kings Highway Division. She earned her bachelor degree from St. Paul’s College in the Philippines and has been a nurse at Beth Israel for 16 years. “She handles difficult situations and emergencies with ‘grace under pressure,’” said Nurse Manager Linda O’Flaherty, RN. “She has a ‘sixth sense’ of knowing when assistance is needed and never needs to be asked.”

PCSAA Elects NEW BOT

Mr. Benjamin C. Causon of Class 1983 was elected chairman of the board of trustees of the Paco Catholic School Alumni Association for the SY2008-2009 in a general assembly of class representatives last June.

The other officers are: Joselito M. Ladaban 1983 – President, Dr. Rose Mercado-Magno 1984 – Vice President, Ma. Luisa F. Candelaria 1982 – Corporate Secretary, Rolando Clarida 1985 – Assistant Corporate Secretary, Melody L. Capahi 1988 – Treasurer, Melvin S. Semera 1991 – Assistant Treasurer, Benedict C. de Guia 1990 – Internal PRO, Joumell T. Borja – External PRO, and Rustico G. Macasaet Jr. – Auditor. Completing the members of the BOT are: Marlon R. Hermo 1978, Alex R. Capili 1980, Joseph Nelson M. Ladaban 1981, Ma. Socorro Lacerna-Mangaoang 1981, and Joaquin F. Reyes 1984.

HS PCB Chooses 7 Scholars for SY08-09

The Parents Coordinating Board of the high school department for SY 2007-2008 announced that it has chosen its 7 scholars for this school year. PCB President Rosillyn R. Tanyag made the announcement through PRO Rachel M. Navarro after the selection committee has made a thorough evaluation and investigation on the personal and family circumstance of the candidates and after consulting past principal Olivia A. Demingoy and current principal Dina B. Abariso. The candidates who will enjoy tuition subsidy for the school year are: Sarah Rose Ocampo (4th Year), Juan Paulo Basilio (3rd Year), Michico Ong (3rd Year), Mary Yvonne France Manalo (3rd Year), Krishna Jean Godino (2nd Year), Marianne Joy Arellano (2nd Year), and, Shalimar Edel Suarez (1st Year).

The PCB has supported the education of 13 scholars since it started in SY2001-2002 during the incumbency of then PCB President Reynaldo A. Mones. Posted 26 June 2008

PCS Library Goes Online

Ms. Guia Gamolo, head of the Instructional Media Center and Library of Paco Catholic School, announced that the online public access catalog system was launched last June 4, 2008 coinciding with the opening of the school year 2008-2009. Instead of the traditional card-based catalog system, students and faculty members can search through the list of library collections using the in-house computers of the school. Eventually, it will be accessible fromoutside the campus through its soon to be relaunched website.

Ms. Gamolo also announced that the library collection has been upgraded through donations from alumni and private individuals, publishers and purchases made by the school. The library occupies the ground floor and the second floor of the Fr. Godofredo Aldenhuijsen Heritage Center while the audio-visual facilities are located at the third and fourth floors. Paconians are Outstanding Pinoys Abroad

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 6 (PINOYGLOBAL) - Dr. Marianito "Mark" Asperilla
is unanimously selected as one of the 2008 Twenty Outstanding Filipinos
Abroad (TOFA) by the TOFA Panel Board of Judges of the Filipino Image
Magazine (FILIM) and the Pinoy Global Online News (PGON), and
the Roxanne Andrea Mendoza Memorial Foundation (RAM). The TOFA was
initiated in 1990 and the bio-data and photographs of the 320 Past TOFA

Class 1974 Honors Marquez, Roldan

The members of Class 1974 feted fellow classmates Mila Marquez and Medeliano Roldan Jr fuap last March 5, 2008 at the Tsoko.Nut along dela Rosa Street in Legaspi Village. Over 30 members of the class attended the simple ceremonies in this restaurant that is also owned by some of their classmates.

Ms. Marquez was recently elected president of the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of the Philippines (4As). She is a very prominent industry leader having risen from the ranks as Presto's brand assistant and later became the general manager of Black Pencil, ad agency Leo Burnett's creative group. From the Commonwealth Foods Corporation and Universal Robina Corporation (makers of the Presto product line and a member of the Gokongwei group of companies) she moved to Bates-Alcantara (Colgate) then to Ace-Saatchi & Saatchi (Purefoods and Jollibee) where she was part of the team that came up with the "I Love You Sabado" campaign for Jollibee. She also worked for Young & Rubicam and later at Lowe where she became active at 4A's Advertising Content and Review Committee screening and hearing panels. She was recently featured in the March 28, 2008 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Architect Roldan is the new National President of the United Architects of the Philippines- Integrated & Accredited Professional Organization of Architects (IAPOA), the first Maharlikan to become National President of the UAP-IAPOA. UAP is an organization of more than 22,000 architects in 115 chapters, 108 based in the Philippines and 5 based in the cities of Hong Kong, Calgary and Ontario in Canada; San Francisco and Los Angeles in the United States and it is the only duly accredited bona fide professional organization of architects in the Philippines by the Professional Regulations Commission. Boy, as he is called by friends and classmates, has served in various capacities in the UAP having been district president and secretary general in recent years. Posted 6 April 2008

Tampol, Sagad Lead Class 2008

Jhayvee B. Tampol and Monica Shiena E. Sagad, valedictorians of the boys and the girls departments respectively, led 759 seniors including 13 graduates from the night school during the commencement ceremonies on March 26, 2008 in the school grounds. Reyann Jhorel P. Lapuz and Aerianne M. Mendoza are the salutatorians. Judge Lorna Francisca Catris-Chuacheng of Class 1978 will be the commencement speaker.

Meanwhile, 662 grade six students received their diplomas from Msgr. DOmingo Cirilos, school director, last March 25, 2008. They were led by Raphaelle Anyssa M. Apigo and Alrenzo Ludwig B. Domingo, valedictorians. Dr. Rodrigo de Mesa, a PCS alumnus, was the guest speaker. Posted 25 March 2008

Pantano Bags 5th Place in Rotary Quiz

Despite only a day’s notice, fourth year PCS Student Dan M. Pantano garnered 5th Place in a field of thirty [30] high school students coming from various schools in Metro Manila. 

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chinatown, the 8TH ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 3810 QUIZ BEE CONTEST was held at the Conrado Benitez Hall of the Philippine Women’s University along Taft Avenue in Manila last Saturday, 16 February 2008.

Questions were culled from the following disciplines: Science, Math, Social Studies, Literature, Culture & Arts as well as general information about Rotary International.

The contest was divided into three [3] phases. Dan M. Pantano and another PCS student, Erron Christopher R. Bacalao, easily breezed through the Elimination Round; but, Erron Christopher R. Bacalao missed the Final Round by one [1] point. The Elimination and Final Rounds each consisted of twenty [20] questions. There were ten [10] questions for the Ranking Round.

The Champion student came from Manila Science High School.

Messrs. Dan M. Pantano and Erron Christopher R. Bacalao were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Pasay Cybercity, PCS Interact and The Young Minds Inc. New PCS Administrators Announced

Ms. Dina B. Abariso will be the next high school principal as Ms. Theresa Bergania assumes the position to be vacated by Ms. Teresa Bercasio, the current Prefect of Discipline. Ms. Carmelita Arroyo will be the new Science Are coordinator replacing Ms. Abariso. Ms. Helen Simba-Orbino will be the new Human Resource Management and Development Officer when Mr. Evangelisto Fabro retires in November this year.

PCS HS Has New Principal

The Board of Trustees of Paco Catholic School, after a series of consulations with the school community and A long deliberation has appointed Ms. Dina B. Abariso, currently moderator of the Science area, as the new principal of the high school department vice Ms. Olive Demingoy who is retiring in May 2008. Ms. Abariso was part of the shortlist that included Ms. Marilou Arenas-Serrano, a PCS alumna, and Ms. Helen Simba-Orbino.

The process of selecting the new principal started with the straw voting among the faculty members. They then took a qualifying exam conducted by an independent agncy. The members of the Administrative Council composed of the School Director, the principals of the 3 departments of the school, the finance officer, the HRD head and the CCF head. The top 3 contenders were determined from the collaboration of data gathered in the above processes and a final interview by the Board of Trustees. The criteria used were: straw voting (10%), principal's choice (5%), academic qualification (20%), performance evaluation (20%), examination result (20%), and the result of the interview by the BOT (25%).
