Young Minds Quiz Wiz Winners
More than one hundred students took the tests in the elimination round of the Young Minds Quiz Wiz held last October 25 and 29, 2003.  From them, 24 entered the final round held last November 8, 2003 at the JCS Auditorium.

In the Grade School Division, Jon Joseph Mariano and Jhayvee Tampol emerged as champions. 

Allen Markiel Ribay and Michael Christian Dizon were declared winners in the Junior High School Division. 

Team Epsilon members Emil Clarence Enriquez and Brimen Son Majometano are the champions in the Senior High School Division.

The winners received trophies and cash prizes aside from gift packs from Avon and HUMAN.

The YMQW was sponsored by Cocolife, PLDT, Avon, Diwa Learning Systems, HUMAN and McDonald’s-Paco. (9 November 2003)

Parents General Council Inaugurates New Office
The Parents General Council of the high school department of Paco Catholic School inaugurated its new office at the 2nd floor of the Saint John Building last November 8, 2003 during the celebration of the 91st founding anniversary of the school.

Rev. Fr. Nolan A. Que, a trustee of PCS, blessed the new office while Msgr. Domingo A. Cirilos, Jr., PCS School Director, cut the ribbon assisted by Ms. Olivia A. Demingoy and Mr. Juanito H. de Vivar, high school and grade school principal, respectively.  Parent officers from last school year were also invited grace the occasion aside from the teacher coordinators and other members of the school’s administrative council. Young Minds Quiz Wiz

The PCSAA is holding a quiz contest this year called Young Minds Quiz Wiz.  The contest was known as Brains Revo when it started in 2000 then  in 2001.  It was co-produced by the PCSAA and the School.

This year the contest takes a new name and will be solely produced by the PCSAA as a major presentation during the observance of the 91st founding anniversary of Paco Catholic School.  There will be 3 divisions — grade school (grades 5 and 6), junior high school (first and second years) and senior division (third and fourth years).  Trophies and other prizes will be awarded to the winners of the contest to be held on November 8, 2003 at 8: a m at the JCS Auditorium.

To date, the contest has PLDT and Avon as sponsors. (8 October 2003)

PCS Teams Prevail

The PCS teams emerged champions in 2 of 6 events in the Private Schools Athletic Meet 2003 Districts 5 and 6 Eliminations which ended last September 18, 2003 at the Msgr. Domingo Cirilos Gym of PCS.  Champions are the volleyball teams of the boys high school department and the girls grade school department.  PCS placed second in the boys high school basketball, boys grade school basketball and girls high school volleyball events.  PCS placed third in the boys grade school volleyball games. Class 1978—Bowling Champs

Class 1978, led by Edmund Co, toppled 1904 pins and  emerged champions in the 2nd Bowling Friendship Games held last September 20, 2003 at the Bowling Inn in Taft Avenue, Manila.  Class 1977 placed second followed by Class 1981, Class 1979, Class 1982 and Class 1980. (22 September 2003)

PCSHS Opens Students’ Week

The Paco Catholic School high school department opened the observation of the Students’ Week after the flag-raising ceremony on September 15, 2003.   The observance of this event was started in 1998 by Ms. Olivia A. Demingoy, high school principal.  Its objectives are to provide another forum to hone the students in their leadership skills, to empower the students and to experience what it is to be a teacher thereby understanding more the role they play in their lives.

For one whole week until September 19, 2003, student administrators and teachers will “run” the operations of the high school department.  The student administrators and support staff were chosen from 44 nominees who are officers of student organizations, have no failing grades, a minimum conduct grade of B and have passed the interview conducted by the administrative staff.  The candidates are further short listed to 13 and finally, to 3 from whom the student principal is chosen.  Only students from the second year up to the fourth year are qualified and can be nominated by the subject-teachers to be student-teachers and administrators.

The student principal this year is Esther Reyes.  The theme for this year is Service . . . Foundation of Christian Leadership. (15 September 2003)

4 PCSAA Scholars Chosen Student-Teachers

Four scholars of the PCSAA were chosen student teachers in this year’s observance of the Students’ Week.  Rosemarie Gonzales handles Math classes.  Cesar Paolo Caspe teaches Science I and Computer II.  Marita Concepcion teaches Technology and Home Economics to second year students and Marjorie Alcantara handles Math II.  Mr. Caspe is a protégé of Class 1975.  Ms. Concepcion is a scholar of Class 1985 while Ms. Alcantara is a scholar of Class 1972. PGC Officers Inducted

The officers, members of the board of directors and homeroom officers were inducted last 16 August 2003.  The activity started with a mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Celso Alcantara, Spiritual Director.  It was followed by the induction officiated by Msgr. Domingo A. Cirilos, Jr., School Director, at the Karel Hall and witnessed by Ms. Olivia A. Demingoy, principal and Fr. Celso.  A short program followed where the parents displayed their talents in singing, dancing and acting.  The third year officers won the top prize with the second year officers placing second.

Immediately the PGC will embark on several activities led by a series of seminars on parenting, the family days, and social action projects. (25 August 2003)

PCSAA 2nd Bowling Friendship Games

The Second Bowling Friendship Games will be held on September 20, 2003 at the Bowling Inn—Taft Avenue.  All alumni are invited to participate in this annual sports event.  For details, call 563-2574 and 338-7084. (26 August 2003)

PCS Starts Night School


The PCS high school department opened its night program this school year.  The night school offers high school curriculum but spread over 5 years.  It is open primarily to parishioners of the Parish of San Fernando de Dilao (Paco) who are at least 18 years old, out of school, employed, male or female.   Classes are held from Monday to Friday [4:30 to 9:30 p. m.] and on Saturday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. 

The teachers come from the high school department of PCS and are working on a voluntary basis and receive no extra remuneration.  The Office of the High School Principal, the unit that supervises the night school,  is open to any assistance from its alumni and friends.

Parents’ General Council Elects Officers

The High School Academic Council and the Faculty of Paco Catholic School invited the parents of the high school students to an open house last Saturday, July 19, 2003, to discuss policy matters and to elect the officers of the PGC.  The parents met with the class advisers of their children for about an hour after which, the election of parent-officers followed. 

Each class elected a chairman, a vice chairman, a secretary and a treasurer.  The chairmen of each class for every year level convened in a separate room with the year level moderators to elect the officers of the year level who in turn will form the members of the PGC.  Under the supervision of the principal, the 16 year level officers elected its officers.  For the third straight year, Mr. Reynaldo A. Mones of Class 1971 and a director of the PCSAA was elected chairman of the PGC.  A total of 220 parent-officers were elected on that day from the homeroom to the PGC. Among its many accomplishments, the PGC initiated the traffic rerouting plan in the area which aims to ease the traffic congestion in the streets around the school.  It also conducted 2 well-attended seminars on parenting.  It launched its own outreach program last Christmas by giving gifts to 200 families of Area 10 in the Parish of San Fernando de Dilao.   Its flagship project is the financial assistance program from which 3 young high school students are now benefiting.  The PGC pays their tuition.

PCSAA Takes 14 Scholars

For school year 2003-2004, several classes are sponsoring 14 students in high school.  The PCSAA financial assistance program is now on its seventh year since it was revived.  The following classes are sponsoring these students — Class 1965, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1975, and 1985.

The different classes are encouraged to sponsor at least one student each.  The program is being coordinated by the PCSAA Committee on Education, Scholarship and Awards headed by Reynaldo A. Mones of Class 1971.  The other members are Aiko M. Maghinang, a former PCSAA scholar and a member of Class 2001, Marie Abigail D. Dagsan, PCS Faculty and a member of Class 1991, former PCSAA vice-president Edwin V. Estrada of Class 1971, former PCSAA president Gabriel Ma. Angelo B. Cascante of Class 1976, and Hipolito Segui of Class 1965.

PCS Parents’ General Council Financial Assistance Program

The PGC has chosen Angelique Brigette Luna to be the recipient of its financial assistance for this year.  The PGC now has 3 scholars under its fold.  Julius Dumangas and Juely Mabasa were able to maintain their grants when they met the minimum grade requirement of 85%.  Both were achievers in their respective classes and are now in second year.

The FAP Screening Committee is headed by Mr. Nathaniel Cruz.  After receiving the application of the prospective grantee, an ocular inspection of his/her residence is conducted by the members of the committee.  The committee then meets and interviews the applicant. 

The PGC will monitor the performance of the students, assist them in their studies should the need arise and determine if they will be able to continue enjoying the grant or not.

PCS Enrolment Increase Continues

Paco Catholic School registered a total enrolment of 7,122, up from 7,030 last year.  Much of the increase came from the high school department forcing it to add a section in the first year and another in the fourth year.  It had a 4.48% increase mainly coming from the first year level.  While there were only 600 students who graduated from grade 6 last year, there are a total of 798 freshmen this year with the balance coming from transferees from other schools.  The average class density in the high school increased from 49.6 last year to 50.0 this year.

The grade school department experienced a slight drop in its enrolment resulting in an average class density of 48.6 from 48.9 last year.

Class 1981 Launches Outreach Programs

The members of Class 1981 formally launched recently the PCS AKAP (Abot Kalinga ng Paconian) ‘81, Inc.  The mission of PCS AKAP is to foster socio-civic awareness among its members through regular outreach activities.  They have conducted several successful programs like the medical/dental/relief missions for about 300 residents of Old Panaderos in Sta. Ana, Manila.  The group has also organized an outreach/relief activity for the street children of Tahanang Mapagpala Foundation, Inc. in Caloocan City.

General Assembly Elects New Board

The General Assembly of Class Representatives convened last 14 June 2003 at the Karel Hall of Paco Catholic School to elect 7 members of the  board of trustees to replace those whose terms are expiring.

Elected for a two-year term are: Atty. Romeo A. Bison Jr. 1979 (27 votes),  Atty. Edmund Altuna 1978 (24), Emily Capili 1978 (22), Reynaldo A. Mones 1971 (20), Jude Sales 1979 (19), Alex Casas 1972 (18), and Gabriel Ma. Angelo B. Cascante 1976 (17).  The tie for the seventh place between Architect Cascante and Mr. Edmund Co (1978) was settled with the toss of a coin following the rules approved by the Committee on Elections.

Completing the Board are Aiko Maghinang 2001, Laverenti U. Zamora 1977, Hernani Mangalile 1973, Norberto Garcia 1977, Reynaldo Castro 1977, Malou Candelaria 1982, Marlene Manuel 1977, and Marlon Hermo 1978.  Their term ends in  May 2004.

The GA also approved the amendments to the articles of incorporation and the by-laws of the PCSAA.  The amendments immediately took effect and governed the proceedings of the election that followed.

In the election of officers held during a special meeting last 18 June 2003, Laverenti U. Zamora of Class 1977 was voted chairman for this year.  The other officers are Marlon Hermo 1978, President; Atty. Romeo A. Bison Jr. 1979, Vice-President; Alexander M. Casas 1972, Corporate Secretary; Atty. Edmund Altuna 1978, Assistant Corporate Secretary; Marlene Z. Manuel 1977, Treasurer; Emily Capili 1978, Auditor; and Norberto Garcia 1977, P. R. O.  The induction of officers will be held on 28 June 2003 at 3:00 p. m.

Danny Holmsen, 72

Daniel Holmsen, writer, musical director, film director and composer and a member of Class 1949, died last Monday, June 2, 2003, in his apartment in Cubao, Quezon City.  Danny, as he is more popularly known, started his career in show business in the 1950s when he was tapped by Doc Perez of Sampaguita Pictures to be the musical director of the movie “Anak sa Panalangin”.   Later he also worked as director and wrote screenplays for movies produced by Sampaguita Pictures some of which starred Nora Aunor.  One of his films was shot in the church of the Parish of San Fernando de Dilao.  He was laid to rest at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City on June 10, 2003.

KUMUSTAHAN 2003 A Success

The multi-class reunion held at Las Vegas, Nevada last May 10, 2003  was a huge success.  Organized by Class 1974, it was attended by 47 alumni from different classes with 23 guests.  One teacher, Ms. Jovita Caballero-de Guia, also attended. Taped messages compiled by PCSAA Chairman Rey Mones were played back during the occasion.  They were from, Mang Tulio Dalumpines, Mrs. Pia M. Cinco, Mrs. Adoracion Ibañez-Pabalate, Mr. Faustino Diaz, Mrs. Monserrat Ascaño-Magalit, Mrs. Helen Simba-Orbino, Mrs. Presentacion B. Gabriel and Msgr. Domingo A. Cirilos, Jr., the present school director.  One of the highlights of the event was an address by PCSAA Chair Mones which was read by his wife, Emily Resurreccion-Mones of Class 1974.  Mr. Mones challenged the attendees to start working on the formation of a PCSAA USA Chapter that will unite all US-based alumni so that they can pool their resources in order to assist the PCSAA and the School.

Edgar Allan Manuel of Class 1979 has formed an egroups for all graduates based in North America.  The address is PCS_US@yahoogroups.com. This is an exclusive eGroup of PACO CATHOLIC SCHOOL graduates who are in the USA and in CANADA (North America). Our objective here is to promote camaraderie among schoolmates, encourage communication and networking among Paconians from different batches, as well as share and discuss specific ideas and concerns re: surviving in North America, and many more.

PCS academic and non-academic personnel who are now based in the US and CANADA are welcome to take part in the eGroup forum.

PCS Grade School Passes PAASCU

The Paco Catholic School grade school department passed the preliminary survey conducted by PAASCU last November 14 and 15, 2002.  PCS is now eligible for the formal visit of the PAASCU accreditors next year.

Max Cinco,  72

Mr. Maximo L. Cinco, Jr. of Class 1950 and two-time PCSAA president passed away in the early morning of May 1, 2003.  He is survived by his wife, Ms. Pia Mortel-Cinco, former PCS English teacher and children all of whom are Paconians.

PCS High School Holds Plenary Session for PAASCU Accreditation

The Paco Catholic School enters another stage in the accreditation process by holding a plenary session from April 28 to 30, 2003 at the Karel Hall.

After spending months of regular meetings doing a self survey, the committee members convened to report on their respective analysis, evaluation and recommendation.  The areas covered are philosophy and objectives, school and community, faculty and academic non-teaching personnel, administration and school staff, instructional program, library and audio-visual center, physical plant, student services and laboratory.

Aside from the faculty and non-teaching personnel who were present, the meeting was attended by the School Director Msgr. Domingo A. Cirilos Jr., Ms. Olive A. Demingoy, high school principal, Mrs. Pia M. Cinco, parish council president and Mr. Reynaldo A. Mones, PCSAA Chairman and chairman of the Parents’ General Council.

Chat Silayan, Elmo Nobleza Guest Speakers at PCS Rites

Chat Silayan of Class 1975 was the guest speakers during the recognition day of the high school department last April 4, 2003 held at the JCS Auditorium.

Elmo Nobleza of Class 1976, meantime, was the commencement speaker during the graduation ceremonies last  March 26, 2003.

Batch 2003-2003 Survives

Another chapter ended, another one begins as Paco Catholic School High School Batch 2002-2003 had their Commencement Exercises.  After months of assignments, tests and recitations, the Seniors had passed their endeavors with flying colors.  The almost two-week long practices led to the Baccalaureate Mass  held last March 25 at the JCS Auditorium.  Msgr. Domingo A. Cirilos Jr., the School Director presided the Thanksgiving Mass.  Right after the mass followed the Recognition Rites which was in the same venue.  This is when the students are given  different awards depending on their performances with regard to their extra-curricular activities (including the PCSAA Dux Awards).  And the most awaited day came when the Seniors bid the school goodbye through their Graduation Rites held at the PCS Grade School Quadrangle last March 26.

Among the 568 graduates emerged the following students who showed exemplary wits in their academics:  for the girls department — Arianne Anne Tejada, valedictorian; Madelaine Ann Ocampo, salutatorian; Mary Grace Pasahol, first honorable mention; Agatha Kristy Gomez, second honorable mention; and Manilyn Lejos, third honorable mention.  For the boys department — Joy Ed Stevenson Rasonable, valedictorian; Daniel Bautista, salutatorian; Ferdinand Cruz Jr., first honorable mention; and Elsewhere Rial Perez, second honorable mention. PCS Grows Intrinsically

As  Paco Catholic School is experiencing its structural development, it continues striving more at it is Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities [PAASCU] accreditation, which focuses on evaluation and continuing improvement of educational quality through self-evaluation and the judgment of peers.  It aims  to stimulate and accelerate the institutional growth and development of schools in their desire to achieve excellence, relevance and effectiveness.

The High School Department started working on this last August 2002 with an orientation seminar conducted by Ms. Maria Pilapil, chair of  PAASCU Secondary Program.  The HS-ISS [Institutional Self Survey] Executive Committee is composed of Msgr. Domingo Cirilos (Survey Executive), Ms. Olivia Demingoy (Chair, Staff Committee), Dr. Loida Hilario (Co-Chair, Staff Committee; Chair, Academic Committee) and Mr. Evangelisto Fabro (Chair, Facilities Committee).  At present, there are nine committees busy working on their documents and survey forms.  The nine areas are Philosophy and Objectives, Faculty, Instruction, Library, Laboratory, Physical Plant, Student Services, Administration and the School Community. PCS Alumni Golfers Association Launched

The Paco Catholic School Alumni Golfers Association [PCSAGA] was formally launched during the awards ceremonies of the 2nd Fr. Godofredo Aldenhuijsen CICM Open Golf Tournament last March 15, 2003 at Club Intramuros Golf Course

Elected chairman of the PCSAGA was Lt. Gen. Rodolfo C. Garcia of PCS Class 1964.  Gen. Garcia is currently the Vice Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

The first tournament under the PCSAGA will be held on May 10, 2003 at the Camp Aguinaldo Golf Course.  Details will be announced later. ( March 2003)

Pete Cervantes, Class  1962, wins 2nd Fr. Godo Cup

Pete Cervantes of Class 1962 bested all golfers in the field last Saturday, March 15, 2003 with a score of 67 in a Blind Callaway scoring format.  Lt. Gen. Garcia is Class “C” champion with a score of 70.  Click here for the list of winners.  (March 2003)
