Fr. Godo Street Signature Campaign

A signature campaign has been launched by the Paco Catholic School Alumni Association in support of a resolution passed by its board of directors to rename Paz Street in Paco to Fr. Godofredo Street.  The resolution to be presented with the attached signatures to Mayor Lito Atienza and the Manila City Council seeks to honor the Dutch school and parish builder, Fr. Godofredo Aldenhuijsen, CICM.  Fr. Godo, as he is lovingly called, also established the Paco Catholic School (PCS), now acknowledged as the largest parochial school in the world.  Fr. Godofredo served as parish priest for 44 years from 1931 to 1975.  He is credited with having built the present church in 1931-1933 with funds coming from friends and relatives, as well as other Belgian CICM priests and through parish fund drives.  He also rebuilt the church and school when these were damaged during the liberation of Manila in 1945.

Efforts to rename the street date back to some 10 years ago with the Cofradia or the Confraternity of the Holy Sepulchre and later, the Knights of Columbus Paco Council 8724 making representations with city hall officials. But these efforts failed.  This year the PCS Alumni Association hopes to produce results with its campaign.  It has sought the support of the Father Provincial of the CICM Philippines, Fr. Romeo Nimez, and the endorsement of Paco parish priest Msgr. Domingo A. Cirilos, Jr.  Foreign-based alumni may register their support through the association's web site www.pacocatholicschoolalumni.com or through e-mail address at paconian@edsamail.com.ph.  For more information, contact the PCS Alumni Center, 563-2574 and 338-7084. [By Mrs. Gloria G. Goloy, TODAY, 1 February 2002]

Ex-CICM Priests Form New Congregation

Garcia Wins Fr. Godo Cup 2002, Msgr. Cirilos is Class “B” 2nd Runner-up

Roland Garcia of Class 1968 won the overall crown in the 1st Fr. Godofredo Open Golf Tournament held last 9 February 2002 at the Club Intramuros in Manila with a score of 65.  Msgr. Domingo A. Cirilos, Jr., School Director and Parish Priest, emerged 2nd runner-up in the Class “B” division with a score of 70.

The event was formally opened with the ceremonial tee off by Msgr. Cirilos, Mr. Joey Castro [1981], tournament director, and PCSAA Chair Reynaldo A. Mones [1971].

Mr. Garcia also scored a hole-in-one in hole number 6.  He also made the second longest drive in hole number 5 with 245 yards.

This first ever venture of the PCSAA in golf had 61 players, two of whom are Japanese.   There were 20 alumni.

An alumni from Class 1949, Romy Ronquillo, flew in from Cebu City to play in the tournament  after reading about it in the newspaper.  The mid-morning drizzle dampened his plan to play and instead shared  with the organizers some stories of his PCS days and about Fr. Godo.  He brought with him a missal which was the “Prize of Loyalty” given to students during that time with a dedication written by Fr. Godo.
